Ares Borghese Reduction - Item #160

43 Inches High x 16.5 Inches Wide x 14 Inches Deep

This Ares Borghese cast is a reduction of the original that stands 83 inches high. The original is an Ancient Roman statue made of marble. The figure has been identified as Ares, the Greek god of war, due to his helmet and the ankle ring given to him by Aphrodite. It is possible the statue is a copy of a Greek original although art historians have not determined this for certain. Nonetheless, the statue has the Greek name for the god, Ares, instead of the Roman name, Mars. The word "Borghese" in the title refers to the Borghese family collection of antiquities which started around the 17th century and a large portion of which was sold to the Louvre Museum in 1807.

Museum: Louvre Museum, Paris
