A depression was added in the top surface of this piece to allow it to hold taper candles. It can also be used as a pedestal for displaying small-scale sculptures. Originally, its use as a pedestal was how the historic P.P. Caproni and Brother catalogs categorized it. The catalogs also identified the piece as a Renaissance sculpture, and although the aesthetic is of that period, we do not know the origin of the cast. The lovely detailing and the size make it a perfect candlestick holder, which is why we altered it in the 1990s.
